Today we celebrate a fundamental day: the’Earth Day 2025, Earth Day. This occasion reminds us of the vital importance of our environment, the natural resources that sustain us, and the urgent need to safeguard planet Earth.

Earth Day 2025: What is Earth Day and Why is it Celebrated? Storytelling

The idea of dedicating a day to Earth has its roots in the 1960s, an era marked by the Kennedy presidency, the music of the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, but also by the strong protests against the Vietnam War. It was precisely in that context of social unrest that the April 22, 1970, the first Earth Day saw the light.

That historic day was not only a celebration, but also the birth of what we know today as the modern environmental movement. Born in the United States, this movement mobilized about twenty million American citizens in an epochal demonstration in defense of the environment. The brilliant intuition was that of the Democratic senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson. Observing the large student demonstrations against the Vietnam War, Nelson realized that a national protest of this scale could provide a decisive boost to the environmental cause.

And so it was. Fifty years after that first historic day—in 2020—Earth Day celebrated its half-century of existence. Today, in the midst of the climate and health crisis, Earth Day takes on an even deeper meaning. Now more than ever, it is crucial. review and rethink our relationship with the planet.

Earth Day 2026: History and Meaning

Earth is a system with finite resources, ecosystems increasingly under pressure, and natural cycles changing at such a rate that future consequences are uncertain. Science provides us with all the knowledge we need to understand that human activities have a negative impact on the Earth system. But the good news is that we also know how to deal with these crises, even if this means rethinking the development model, redistributing well-being and wealth, and ensuring equal opportunities and rights for all. The challenge we face is unprecedented.

Gaylord Nelson, the man who founded Earth Day, was not just a politician, but a staunch supporter of environmental causes. The son of a nurse and a doctor, a lawyer, and a World War II veteran, Nelson was a charismatic man. He even managed to persuade President John F. Kennedy to dedicate a series of speeches to the nation on environmental and conservation issues.

A fundamental aspect of Nelson's thinking was his belief that economic development should not conflict with environmental protection. Indeed, as he loved to repeat, “It is the economy that must adapt to the rules of biodiversity, not the other way around.”. His efforts were recognized in 1995 with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

But Nelson wasn't just an environmental defender; he was also a strong supporter of civil rights and liberties and an early opponent of the Vietnam War. During his Earth Day speech in 1970, he harshly criticized the government for spending huge sums on a "senseless" war instead of caring for America's cities, which he called "inhumane traps for thousands of people.".

Before the Earth Day explosion, the ground had been prepared by significant events. One of these was the publication in 1962 of the book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson. This seminal work prompted Americans to question the uncontrolled use of pesticides and the correlation between pollution and health. However, the time was not yet ripe for radical change, and a strong signal was needed to shake up the institutions.

Earth Day is therefore much more than a simple day of celebration. It is a moment of deep reflection on our role in the Earth system, a reminder of the fragility of our planet and a urgent call for action. Respecting and protecting the Earth means recognizing the limits of its resources, the delicate nature of its ecological balance, and the need for a sustainable future for all. Earth Day invites us to become conscious and responsible stewards of our unique and precious planet.
