Through the’education, the active participation and the civil society involvement, this day aims to build a future where animals are recognized everywhere as sentient beings, meritevoli di rispetto e tutela. Oggi, più che mai, bisogna porre l’accento riguardo La Giornata Mondiale degli Animali 2025.

The historical origins and history of World Animal Day 2025

Today, October 4, 2025, we celebrate World Animal Day. This very important anniversary was officially established in 1931. But its history begins a few years earlier thanks to the vision of Heinrich Zimmermann, German writer and editor of the magazine Mensch und Hund (Man and Dog). Zimmermann organized the first celebration on March 24, 1925 in Berlin, initially gaining the support of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia. In 1929 he decided to move the anniversary to October 4th, the date we know today, and worked tirelessly to spread this initiative internationally. The turning point came in May 1931: during an international congress for the protection of animals held in Florence, Zimmermann's proposal was accepted, officially sanctioning the October 4th as World Animal Day.

Goals and mission: improving animal welfare worldwide

The main objective of World Animal Day 2025 is raise the status of animals and improve their standard of living and protection on a global scale. Every year, the anniversary becomes a meeting point for organizations, businesses, schools, youth associations and individual citizens, who organize events and activities aimed at:

Promote the public awareness;

Raise awareness of animal rights issues;

Mobilizing an international network capable of generating concrete changes;

Sharing best practices and success stories to inspire others.

Thanks to the visibility offered by the official website of World Animal Day, many of these events obtain significant media coverage, helping to bring animal welfare issues into the mainstream front page.

A growing movement: international examples of change

Over the years, the celebration has helped trigger legislative and cultural reforms in numerous countries.
Here are some emblematic cases:

Egypt: Amina Abaza, president of SPARE (Society for the Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt), took advantage of the occasion to have the inclusion of the Egyptian Constitution a clause on animal welfare.

Cairo University: Academic conferences and debates have been organized to promote alternatives to the use of animals in laboratories, involving teachers, students, and NGOs.

Lebanon and Colombia: Organizations such as Animals Lebanon and AnimaNaturalis have obtained municipal resolutions obliging the relevant ministries to commemorate the day annually, encouraging a broad citizen awareness.

Sudan: The Sudanese Animal Care & Environmental Organisation has pushed Parliament to pass a National Animal Protection Law, thanks to the increased awareness generated by the celebrations.

Nepal: The Department of Animal Services participates annually in events organized by the Himalayan Animal Rescue Trust (HART), encouraging the involvement of local communities in animal protection.

These examples demonstrate that World Animal Day is much more than just a commemoration: it is a lever for social and legislative change.

WWF China, International Panda Day: The global symbol of conservation

Hug Day 2026: On January 21st, embrace your health and your heart.

What to do on World Animal Day 2025

Every individual, organization, or company can make a significant contribution.
