Protection from ultraviolet light

Pandas' small eyes, almost devoid of white parts, are extremely sensitive to bright light. The black spots absorb UV rays and increase the surface area of the fur that protects the eyes, similar to natural sunglasses, which helps reduce sensitivity to sunlight.

Intimidating function against predators

Although large predators are now rare in their habitat, pandas traditionally have to defend themselves from animals like tigers. The spots around their eyes can make them appear larger and therefore intimidating, acting as a visual deterrent.

Individual recognition

Each panda has a unique pattern of black spots around its eyes, similar to human fingerprints. This allows the animals to recognize each other and contributes to social interactions within the species.

Progressive development of spots

At birth, the pups are free of black spots, which begin to appear after a few days. By day 15, the spots appear, and they reach their adult form within a little over a month and a half.

Other curiosities
