An evolutionary paradox that has left scientists speechless and which, today, represents one of the most cited case studies in evolutionary biology. So... <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ciaopanda.it\/panda-gigante-intestino-carnivoro-bambu\/\">Why does the panda eat bamboo if it is not designed to digest it well?<\/a><\/strong> The answer is a brilliant mix of evolution, dietary opportunism, and digestive inefficiency transformed into a competitive advantage. The panda eats bamboo because it&#039;s a resource. <strong>abundant, not very competitive<\/strong> and rich in proteins that its carnivorous body is designed to absorb. Its short digestive system allows it to quickly eliminate difficult-to-digest fibers and retain what it really needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why the panda (carnivore) eats bamboo: it is adapted to catch it but not to digest it.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ciaopanda.it\/panda-gigante-intestino-carnivoro-bambu\/\">A &quot;herbivore&quot; body... at least in appearance<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The panda has developed perfect tools for handling bamboo:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A <strong>pseudo-thumb<\/strong> to grasp it precisely;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>strong jaws and flat teeth to break it;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a robust skull, designed for crushing tough fibers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A textbook set of equipment. Or almost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A totally carnivorous intestine<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And here comes the twist:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>its intestinal flora is poor in bacteria that digest cellulose;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Digestive transit is rapid, much more similar to that of a predator.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Result? The panda <strong>he chews little<\/strong>, assimilates only what is necessary (the proteins of the bamboo) and discards the rest at the speed of light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How much energy does the panda really get from bamboo?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not much. That&#039;s why he has to eat until <strong>38-40 kg of bamboo per day<\/strong> to cover energy needs.<br>It only digests the <strong>20%<\/strong> of ingested dry matter \u2014 versus the 60\u201390% typical of meat-eating carnivores. And what about when you don&#039;t eat? <a href=\"https:\/\/ciaopanda.it\/panda-giganti-letargo-verita\/\">Sleeps up to 12 hours in total.<\/a> Its metabolic business model is quite simple: <strong>eat for energy\u2026 to keep eating.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Do you ever eat meat?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, but rarely. The panda <strong>it&#039;s not a good predator<\/strong>, so meat enters the diet only if it can be easily obtained. The panda is an atypical hypercarnivore<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like the cat, it gets most of its energy from <strong>proteins<\/strong>. Most live in the mountains. <strong>Qinling<\/strong> e <strong>Minshan<\/strong>,<a href=\"https:\/\/ciaopanda.it\/perche-panda-gigante-vive-solo-in-cina-origine-habitat-conservazione\/\"> in ecosystems where bamboo is dominant.<\/a> Good news. The species has been reclassified from <strong>\u201cin danger\u201d<\/strong> a <strong>\u201c&quot;vulnerable&quot;\u201d<\/strong> thanks to a 17% increase in population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What species of bamboo does it eat?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It depends on the region:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Qinling:<\/strong> mainly <em>Bashania fargesii<\/em> e <em>Fargesia qinlingensis<\/em><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Minshan:<\/strong> great variety of the genre <em>Fargesia<\/em> plus some species of <em>Bashania<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A diversified portfolio, in short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A unique diet in the world: herbivorous on the outside, carnivorous on the inside<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recent studies have confirmed that, at the macronutrient level, the panda&#039;s diet is more similar to that of a carnivore than that of a herbivore. It obtains approximately <strong>50% of energy from proteins<\/strong>, like wild cats and wolves. Its evolution didn&#039;t radically change its digestive system: it preferred to optimize what it already had.
