At the giant panda base in Chengdu, Sichuan, the smart home renovation, degli spazi interni è partita da un’idea semplice ma rivoluzionaria. Far “respirare” la casa della specie protetta. In origine non c’erano finestre a tutta altezza e il primo piano era praticamente al livello del terreno; oggi ingegneri e progettisti hanno ripensato tutto per creare a drier, brighter and more comfortable environment.

«We are doing our best to ensure a dry and comfortable environment for the giant pandas» indoor enclosures.”.

Automatic water, smart birthing, and digital safety

The renovation of the giant pandas' smart home isn't just about walls and windows. The structure is a real “user friendly” revolution for pandas. Keepers can move and collaborate from different points, intervening quickly and in coordination without disturbing mothers and cubs. At the same time, the base has installed intelligent systems such as electronic perimeters and advanced monitoring to observe panda behavior and ensure the safety of animals and operators.

«We have created systems that combine monitoring and protection, so we can watch over our pandas 24 hours a day», explain the team's experts, who are busy building a real smart panoramic area dedicated to the giant panda.

Beneath their feet: the underground solution that keeps them dry

Technology works even where no one sees it.: under the pandas' paws.

Smart enrichment: custom-made perches, toys, and feeders“

From the floors to the ceiling of the enclosure, the design of the environmental enrichments è pensato con la stessa attenzione. L’ingegnere per la conservazione della fauna selvatica Zhang Hao He says the starting point is always the same: building “the best and most perfect things for animals, the ones they really like.”.

Observing panda mothers and their cubs, the team noticed that the cubs prefer to rest high up, while the mother watches over them from below. So they designed perches and platforms that allow mothers more room to move around, without disturbing the cubs' resting position. Another important change was switching from nails and iron studs to screws , to reduce the risk of accidents and create more stable and comfortable structures.

«Animals learn always and everywhere.».

Whenever an enrichment doesn't work as expected, the team rethinks it, moves it, modifies it, with a simple rule. Always do better next time, to reduce mistakes that could annoy the animals..

At the Chengdu base, everyone repeats a key concept. L’ingegnere paesaggista senior Liao Jun He explains that his job is to translate the needs of experts and keepers into clear instructions for construction teams, thus avoiding misunderstandings and structures that are unsuitable for the animals.

Behind every "smart" wall, every perch, and every electronic system, there are hours of observation, comparison, and testing. It's a team effort in which pandas don't speak, but communicate through behaviors, preferences, and rejections, and humans must learn to listen to them. From architectural details to daily micro-choices, the giant panda smart house It demonstrates that true innovation lies not only in devices, but in the ability to use technology to build peace, tranquility, and respect between us and animals.

This project also gave birth to a video story

Starting from October 17th, the first series of micro-documentaries on the environmental improvement of the giant panda, “The People Behind the National Treasures”, viene aggiornata ogni due settimane e va in onda ogni venerdì alle 18:00.
