Who is Director Hua Hua? History, Characteristics, and Grandfather

Director Hua Hua's story is truly incredible! Hua Hua's full name is He Hua, and her name means "Flower Flower." Her sweetness and unique appearance have earned her the adorable nickname "Little Fox Flower." But that's not the only nickname her many fans have given her. The little panda is also known as "Hugging Bamboo with a Hidden Face" for her unique and tender way of enjoying her favorite food. The "princess," as she is often called by her fans, was born on July 4, 2020. She currently resides at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Sichuan Province.

Her parents are Mei Lan and Cheng Gong (who died at the age of 23 in September 2023 at the Chengdu Base), and she has a twin sister named He Ye. Initially, due to her appearance, it was thought that He Ye It was originally thought to be a male, but subsequent observations revealed its true gender. Far beyond her adorable appearance and funny habits, Hua Hua has become a true cultural phenomenon, culminating in her unexpected appointment in April 2024 as Honorary Director of Culture and Tourism for the city of Chengdu. A title that leverages her extraordinary popularity to promote the "panda city's" tourism industry. But let's take a closer look at her characteristics and her loving “grandfather” Tan Jintao.

The story of director Hua Hua

But to fully understand the rise of the iconic director Hua Hua, it's necessary to retrace the steps of her singular life journey. When the tender little panda was nine months old, a totally unexpected event changed her life forever. Hua Hua's biological mother, Chenggong, was no longer able to care for her due to health issues. At such a delicate time, fortunately, little Hua Hua found a new mother in another giant panda named Yuan Run, just 8 years old (young, healthy female giant pandas, between 4 and 10 years old, are equivalent to a human's 20-50 years).

It was the latter who provided the little girl with all the necessary care, guiding her in learning fundamental survival skills, such as chewing bamboo and climbing trees, even though, due to a disability in her right hind leg, which faces outward, she is unable to hold on and run.

Paw malformation

Hua Hua has a congenital malformation in her right hind leg known as overpronation (or valgus), which causes it to appear to be rotated outward. Since she was a baby, staff had noticed this genetic anomaly, inherited from her family tree, and applied regular massages and care to correct it, allowing her to walk almost normally despite her slow gait and obvious difficulty climbing trees. This trait doesn't prevent her from leading an active and happy life. On the contrary, Hua Hua remains one of the most beloved pandas, with excellent overall health, a thick coat, and a voracious appetite, despite her double teeth that slightly slow down her feeding.

Hua Hua's birthday celebrations and appointment as "director"“

Today, while most pandas her age attend what is affectionately called "primary school" within the research base, Director Hua Hua continues to "attend kindergarten," staying in the quiet Villa No. 6. This prolonged stay in the cub ward is due to the fact that she has not yet reached the minimum height required to join her peers, except with her sister. However, her "difference" does not deprive her of affection and attention. On the contrary. Watching over her with dedication is her trusted caretaker, affectionately nicknamed "Grandpa" Tan Jintao.

Hua Hua, the social media star

Hua Hua's second birthday, celebrated on July 4, 2022, in the research base's youth courtyard, was a joyful event shared with her keepers and her first fans. But it was her third birthday that marked a true explosion in popularity. That year, Hua Hua became a global star, conquering social media. The hashtag "Panda He Hua" quickly rose to the top of trending lists, remaining at the top of search results for a long time, and earning her the coveted title of "Top Panda Star" among netizens.

Its growing fame has also had a significant impact on the local economy. During the 2023 May Day holiday, the research center attracted a significant influx of 264,000 visitors, becoming the second most popular tourist destination in China during that period. The wave of visitors, drawn by Hua Hua's sweetness, contributed significantly to the increase in sales of panda-related products.

In July 2023, as Chengdu prepared to host the 31st World University Summer Games, He Hua appeared alongside "grandfather" Tan Jintao in the promotional video "New Thousand Miles of Rivers and Mountains: Vibrant Sichuan." Her presence delighted viewers, further contributing to her growing international fame.

But her appointment as honorary director wasn't the only recognition of her celebrity status. At the prestigious 2024 Spring Festival Gala, He Hua was the guest of honor, further cementing her position as an international star. Later, on her fourth birthday, the princess and her sister He Ye attended their grand celebration together at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, receiving special treats of ice cakes, pumpkins, apples, and tender bamboo shoots. Nearly a thousand people attended the party, patiently waiting in line just to admire her in all her adorable beauty.

The Princess's Unique Features

Hua Hua's fame is undoubtedly linked to her unique physical appearance. Her plump, rounded body resembles the shape of a classic Japanese on giri, while her eye spots are characteristically shaped like inverted tears and her muzzle is slightly pointed. The black spots on her shoulders are asymmetrically positioned, making her instantly recognizable, as is her cute tail. Another physical peculiarity is her right hind leg, which is congenitally deformed and slants outward. This condition affects her ability to climb trees with ease and her running speed, giving her a slow, particularly charming gait.

Regarding her personality, Hua Hua is described as a sweet and affectionate panda, docile and calm. Her calm personality clearly sets her apart from other, more lively pandas. It's no surprise, then, that she's considered a true social media star, beloved by a huge audience. She's playful and seems particularly comfortable when visitors take photos of her, almost understanding their desire to immortalize her uniqueness. However, her hind leg disability has a distinctive characteristic: Hua Hua is unable to climb trees, or at least struggles greatly, and often gives up. This peculiarity has made her even more special and vulnerable in the eyes of her many fans.

The diet

As for her diet, like all other pandas, it relies primarily on bamboo. When it's time for her meal, "Grandpa" Tan calls her with a gentle "Guòlái," meaning "come." The director seems to immediately recognize the arrival of her food, as, due to her calm nature and difficulty climbing, she often risks being left empty-handed if other, more agile pandas steal her meal.

Hua Hua's story is a shining example of how an animal, despite its unique characteristics and vulnerabilities, can win the hearts of millions and become a symbol of kindness and resilience. Her rise from a needy puppy to honorary director is a testament to the power of affection, dedication, and the ability to find beauty in uniqueness and diversity.
