Giant panda Lu Lu's death: Treatment and efforts to save him

In recent months, the majestic panda Lu Lu has faced a delicate health journey. The Ya'an Research Center provided him with personalized care, including vitamin and trace element supplements. In addition, specific activities were carried out to improve his well-being, especially to manage signs of aging, such as facial depigmentation. Panda Lu Lu died on April 4, 2025, from severe multiorgan failure involving his kidneys and lungs. The cause was intestinal perforation, complicated by massive ascites and intestinal necrosis, which within hours led to a severe abdominal infection and inevitable death. According to Panda Center experts, intestinal perforation is a critical condition in these animals, favored by a diet rich in bamboo and common in older specimens.

Early diagnosis

The fibrous nature of bamboo itself poses risks to intestinal health. In cases of weakness or chronic illness, the lining of the digestive tract can be more easily damaged. Early diagnosis is essential for surgical intervention, but giant pandas have such a high pain threshold that symptoms are almost invisible until the terminal stages. Lu Lu left a priceless legacy, which lives on in the new generations born in research centers and zoos around the world. His story once again highlights the crucial importance of conservation programs and excellent veterinary care to ensure the future of this iconic species.
