Have you ever heard of the giant panda Zhu Zhu? Let's find out who this beautiful bear is and why he's important. Deep in the heart of the Qinling Mountains lives a particularly beloved giant panda: Zhu Zhu (珠珠). This name, which in Chinese means “Pearl”, is now engraved in the history of giant pandas not only for her extraordinary lineage, but above all for her maternal spirit. Zhu Zhu, in fact, is the biological mother of numerous puppies and, even more importantly, she was the adoptive mother of the famous Qi Zai, the only one brown giant panda in the world bred in captivity.

Here's who the giant panda Zhu Zhu is: the origins

Er Qiao, the story: the giant panda with a calm and reserved nature

Zhu Zhu and Qi Zai: the deep bond

One of the most exciting episodes in Zhu Zhu's story is his role as adoptive mother of Qi Zai (七仔). Born with a very rare brown and white coat but rejected by his biological mother. To help him survive, researchers at the center devised a plan as ingenious as it was sweet: they sprayed him with some of Zhu Zhu's urine to introduce his familiar scent. At first, Zhu Zhu looked curiously at the seemingly "different" puppy. But soon her maternal instinct took over. She immediately welcomed him as if he were her own flesh and blood. She warmed Qi Zai, fed him, and protected him until he was six months old. This gesture saved the brown and white panda's life, thus writing a moving chapter in the history of giant panda conservation.

A life lesson

The story of Zhu Zhu is not just about dates and litters. It is a tale of resilience, dedication and maternal love. Her ability to raise not only her own young, but also one of the rarest pandas in the world, makes her a symbolic figure in biodiversity conservation programs. Qinling Giant Panda Research Center, thanks to specimens like Zhu Zhu, continues to be one of the most important institutions in the world in the fight for the conservation of this iconic species. Zhu Zhu is much more than a panda: she is an icon of animal compassion, an adoptive mother who broke genetic barriers and a pillar of giant panda conservation. Her story, intertwined with that of Qi Zai, is a concrete example of how maternal love can take surprising forms—even between different colored furs.
