Wild giant panda mating: First historic video released in Tangjiahe

An exceptional event has made the rounds of the world among researchers and wildlife enthusiasts. For the first time ever, a has been recorded mating between wild giant pandas in the heart of the nature reserve of Tangjiahe, in the Chinese province of Sichuan. This extraordinary result came after a long 23 years of infrared monitoring, marking a historic turning point in the study of the reproductive behavior of this iconic species.

Giant panda mating: a stroke of luck (and 23 years of patience)

While analyzing the data collected from the infrared cameras installed in the mixed coniferous and broadleaf forest at 2,280 meters above sea level, two members of the staff of the Motianling Protection Station, Li Chenglong and Shen Xingguo, came across an unprecedented footage. It was April, the golden season for the giant panda reproduction, and the cameras captured a very rare scene: a male engaged in courting a female in heat.

The observed behavior was a perfect example of a natural ritual: the male adopted the strategy of “sniff, follow and push lightly”, accompanied by low grunts and characteristic vocalizations such as aow-aow e woo-woo. After a series of mutual signals, the two pandas finally mated: a unique moment, never before documented in this habitat.

Record data and exceptional discoveries

The video is just the tip of the iceberg of an extraordinary research season. In the first half of 2025, researchers at the Tangjiahe section collected unprecedented numbers:

  • 268 videos of courtship behaviors of wild pandas.
  • 1,015 habitat surveys natural.
  • 1,799 data on the activity of other species in the same area.
  • 106 infrared videos with the presence of giant pandas.

In total, 392 videos have offered a privileged window into the intimate lives of pandas in the wild. This wave of information has allowed us to mark well four historical "firsts" for the study of giant pandas in Tangjiahe:

  • Three wild pandas captured in the same shot for the first time.
  • Discovery of a second breeding site in the area.
  • Simultaneous recordings in three areas, including Motianling.
  • First documented video of reproductive behavior of a wild panda.

Tangjiahe It is thus confirmed not only as a sanctuary for wild giant pandas, but also as a privileged observatory for better understanding their reproductive behaviour, a key element for ensuring the survival of the species.
