Panda Zi Yao

From the forest to the safety of Shenshuping. The story of wild panda Zi Yao, the “hidden gem,” is captivating panda lovers around the world.

The world of giant panda conservation has a new iconic face: Zi Yao. This female, the protagonist of a delicate rescue in 2024, has quickly become one of the most beloved presences within the CCRCGP (China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda) in Shenshuping, in the Wolong National Nature Reserve. Her story is not only a tale of survival, but also a testament to China's unwavering commitment to protecting its most precious natural treasures.

Wild Panda Zi Yao: The Story, the Rescue, and the Arrival in Shenshuping

Panda Zi Yao was rescued in 2024 in difficult conditions, having been found severely weakened by injuries and illnesses that would have made it impossible for her to continue living independently in her natural habitat. Thanks to the timely intervention of the center's experts, the panda was transferred to the Shenshuping base, a world-class center for the care and rehabilitation of these mammals. Today, Zi Yao resides in Pavilion No. 1, a protected environment where she receives constant care and a targeted diet. These are essential conditions for ensuring the well-being of an animal who, despite having lived in the wild for years, now requires constant support.

Why did Zi Yao conquer the web?

With a round face, short muzzle, and distinctive small eyes, Zi Yao was quickly dubbed by fans and staff as "the center's hidden gem." Beyond her captivating appearance, her personal story is striking. Zi Yao was presumably born in 2007 and endured 17 years of life in the wild before arriving at the center. This wild past makes her a unique case study, a symbol of the resilience of a species that, despite great progress in conservation, continues to face daily environmental challenges.

A symbol of conservation

Zi Yao's presence at Shenshuping isn't just a matter of media attention. It represents an important piece in the giant panda conservation puzzle. The Shenshuping center, which already hosts international stars like the panda Fu Bao, continues to prove itself a global benchmark for biodiversity conservation. It offers a new opportunity to specimens that, without human intervention, would not have survived. Following Zi Yao's daily routine means supporting and better understanding the invaluable work carried out daily by Wolong's experts.
