The giant panda is much more than a rare animal. Today it represents the greatest icon of environmental conservation and dialogue between countries. During the Global Panda Partners 2025 Conference in Chengdu, China showcased its latest achievements in protecting this species, a symbol of ecological progress and global collaboration.
Global Panda Partners 2025: The event to raise awareness for the conservation of the species
Global Panda Partners 2025 is one of the most anticipated and important events to once again raise public awareness about conservation and biodiversity. Sichuan Province is strengthening its conservation network with the new base in Mianyang, integrated with four other innovative centers. A concrete example is the international panda missions "Chenxing" and "Xiaoyue" in Malaysia, which are strengthening global partnerships in wildlife protection. The panda's image is now pervading the global pop culture, through merchandising, innovative design, and digital initiatives that attract creatives from over twenty countries. The "Panda Homeland" competition and the newly formed international digital alliance are creating a multilingual network reaching over 500 million users annually.
Cutting-edge environmental monitoring technologies—such as integrated big data and drone systems—allow us to collect and share information on over 4,000 square kilometers of habitat, facilitating scientific cooperation between international institutions. In Malaysia, the introduction of heat-resistant bamboo and customized panda welfare systems are the direct result of synergies between local and Chinese experts. This ongoing collaboration is also generating tangible results at prestigious European facilities: Berlin Zoo has recorded its second pair of panda twins thanks to programs with China.
Technological innovations and the excellence of research bases
Concrete technological innovations and the exchange of know-how have enabled panda conservation to overcome geographical barriers, fostering unprecedented population growth. Over the past few decades, wild pandas have increased from 1,100 to nearly 1,900, while the number of active pandas has reached 808.At the heart of this success is a sprawling network of 67 nature reserves, the 22,000 km² Giant Panda National Park, and the restoration of over 22,000 hectares of strategic habitat. Sichuan is now home to 1,227 wild pandas alongside numerous rare species, in a thriving ecosystem where panda sightings rose to 185 in 2024.
These centers of excellence collaborate to improve breeding, reintroduction into the wild, and scientific exchanges. The Chinese model proves effective not only for conserving a species, but for restoring entire ecosystems. The giant panda is also a powerful ambassador of universal values. Ahead of the Golden Panda Awards, "love cards" were sent to six countries, gathering nearly 200 messages of affection: from San Francisco to Australia, the panda inspires unity and hope.
The words of the former vice-president of the African Union: "Beloved soft ambassadors"“
Since 1990, China has collaborated with 26 institutions in 20 countries and has supported the birth of 71 panda cubs abroad, transforming the conservation of this species into a shared scientific and cultural mission.According to Erastus Mwencha, former vice president of the African Union, the giant panda has gone from being a mere symbol to a true bridge for strategic cooperation. The future goal is to strengthen international research, the exchange of ideas, and ecological collaboration globally. Pandas embody China's dedication to nature and its desire to unite diverse cultures. These beloved "fluffy ambassadors" teach us that environmental protection can truly transcend all borders.
