When it comes to comfort and design for giant pandas, the definition evolves as they grow. From the first months, when cubs need lively spaces to play, to adulthood, which requires tranquility and personal space, the design of their environments must meet different needs. The renovation project of the Sunshine maternity ward marked a new era for the comfort and well-being of pandas.
Creating the perfect home, dedicated spaces for puppies: safety and stimulation in a medical-healthcare environment
Construction engineer Wang Ping emphasized that the reorganization of the Sunshine maternity ward has the primary goal of improving preschools. With medical-grade materials for the floors and walls, the focus is on hygiene and infection prevention. An advanced ventilation system has also been adopted to ensure clean air and reduce the spread of germs. The new, larger, tatami-style rooms offer the puppies more space to move around, encouraging activity and play.
Natural materials for a more authentic habitat
Another innovative step towards comfort and design for the giant pandas was replacing the solid wood flooring with untreated, raw wood, as explained by landscape engineer Fu Yanhua. This type of surface, rougher and more natural, more closely resembles the pandas' native environment, accelerating natural behaviors such as biting and scratching. The expanded space doubles the available surface area compared to natural logs, making the area more stimulating.
Lighting designed for pandas' visual health
The renovation also included expanding the exhibition hall, increasing its size from 30 to 130 square meters. Wang Ping explained that the lighting has been completely overhauled, using large-area light sources and diffused photoelectric curtains, capable of simulating natural light with uniform intensity. This system reduces eye strain on the pandas, creating a more comfortable environment for their sensitive eyesight.
Comfort with controlled stimuli: the right amount of challenge for healthy development
According to animal husbandry expert Wu Kongju, the concept of human comfort does not always equate to animal welfare. Giant pandas' well-being is achieved by providing stimulation and activities that allow them to develop key skills, avoiding excessive comfort that can stunt growth. Small daily challenges transform the environment into an opportunity for growth, enabling pandas to improve their natural behavior and their response to life's challenges.
Custom design to fit every panda
Each individual has unique tastes and physical characteristics. Engineer Zhang Hao stated that, to respect these characteristics, elements such as dry leaves were introduced to allow the bears to build nests and thus enjoy natural shelter. This type of behavior is essential for their adaptability and the survival of the species.
Age-appropriate facilities for targeted comfort
For the older pandas, the project includes adding windbreaks and low access points, allowing for stress-free movement. The beds and climbing frames have been adapted to their needs, aiming to ensure a safe and comfortable environment at every stage of their lives.
Constant monitoring and protection
Staff are committed to maintaining a quiet environment, monitoring noise levels in real time and minimizing interference using remote control technology to ensure the pandas' complete peace of mind. The documentary "Building a Dream Panda Home," available on the iPanda Panda Channel, details this transformation, updating every two weeks to share the behind-the-scenes work involved in providing the giant pandas with an ideal habitat.
