The argument between Abao and Qi Zai: what really happened between the two pandas?

Qi Zai's Bite in Abao

Inside one of the most importantChinese giant panda conservation research centers, there was an incident of a fight between two pandas, Abao and Qi Zai which left fans and scholars speechless. Qi Zai, the famous panda with the brown and white coat, has bit his best friend, Abao. The latter is another male from the same facility, in a moment of high tension. The attack left a visible wound on Abao's ear, going viral on Chinese social media and sparking discussion about the natural behavior of pandas in captivity.

The Argument Between Abao and Qi Zai: The Argument Between the Two Pandas

Following the argument between the two pandas, Abao and Qi Zai, according to the centre staff, the incident occurred during a close encounter between the two specimens, not due to human error. But a sudden outburst of aggression from Qi Zai. The brown panda, known for its rare genetics and often independent nature, would have reacted instinctively to a gesture perceived as a threat. Scientists explain that, despite their docile appearance, giant pandas they can become competitive and territorial, especially adult males.

The incident has sparked a new debate among both ethology experts and the millions of users who follow every update on the Chinese pandas. Some have interpreted the gesture as a normal display of dominance, comparable to the conflicts that arise in nature during the breeding season. Others, however, consider it a warning bell on the need for more careful management of social interactions in captivity. It must always be remembered, however, that thanks to the ongoing studies and research of the Centers, researchers, and the loving care of the keepers, the giant panda has gone from "at risk of extinction" to "vulnerable" since 2016. Therefore, there are approximately 808 specimens in captivity, while in the wild there are between 1,864 and 1,900 specimens. These data are increasingly reassuring for the planet.

Treatment for Abao

Sources at the center have assured that Abao He was immediately rescued and recovered without serious consequences, while Qi Zai was temporarily isolated to avoid further contact. Veterinarians confirmed that the episode, although dramatic, does not represent a case of behavioral anomaly, but an isolated event in a context where coexistence between adult males requires great caution.

The story has inevitably touched the international public, who fondly follow the story of Qi Zai, the only known brown panda in the world, a symbol of the panda populations of the Qinling Mountains. The quarrel with Abao thus becomes not only a zoological news story, but also an opportunity to reflect on the emotional and social complexity of a species that continues to fascinate and teach us how unpredictable nature is.
