Saturday, September 20th, was a day of celebration at the Madrid Zoo Aquarium, when the facility celebrated the fifth birthday of the two giant pandas who have been living in the Spanish capital for over a year. The undisputed stars of the celebration were Jin Xi, a curious male always hungry for bamboo, and Zhu Yu, a lively female equally beloved by the public.
Madrid celebrates the 5th birthday of giant pandas Jin Xi and Zhu Yu:
For giant pandas Jin Xi and Zhu Yu's five-year birthday, the Madrid Zoo staff prepared a special fruit and bamboo cake, which one of the two bears immediately sniffed and tasted. Meanwhile, hundreds of visitors enjoyed acrobatic shows and educational activities designed to raise awareness among adults and children about the protection of this iconic species. The giant panda couple arrived in Madrid on April 29, 2024, directly from China. The two animals have quickly become true stars of the zoo. With their playful behavior and charismatic presence, they have helped increase public interest, becoming one of the most visited attractions.
The fifth anniversary was not just a fun event, but also an opportunity to highlight the value of the international program that regulates the presence of pandas in Europe. These agreements, the result of collaboration between zoological institutions and Chinese research centers, aim to protect and ensure the survival of a species still considered vulnerable. With selfies, applause, and children's curiosity, Jin Xi and Zhu Yu's celebration further strengthened the role of modern zoos not only as places of entertainment, but also as spaces for environmental education and cultural diplomacy. For one day, Madrid celebrated two guests whose black-and-white charm reminds us of the urgency of protecting the planet's biodiversity.
